Letters and Testimony

This page is an archive with the letters of advocacy that Lid I-5 has sent to public agencies and elected officials, including letters co-signed with coalitions. It also lists some of our key appearances at public hearings for testimony.

Acronyms include the Pike Pine Urban Neighborhood Council (PPUNC, which was the early host for Lid I-5), The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), and Washington State Convention Center (WSCC).

Letters

April 2, 2024 – Seattle Mayor, Council, and Department of Transportation | Joint letter by a coalition of highways-related advocacy groups asking for highway mitigation funding in the Seattle Transportation Levy. The Levy passed with $30 million for Aurora Avenue improvements and $500,000 for lid feasibility studies in the U District and at Pinehurst Station.

March 2, 2024 – Seattle Mayor and Department of Transportation | Comment on the draft Seattle Transportation Plan.

February 17, 2024 – Seattle Mayor and Office of Planning and Community Development | Comment on the draft Seattle Comprehensive Plan.

August 20, 2023 – Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development | Letter outlining the rationale for Seattle to apply for a planning grant from the federal Reconnecting Communities program. OPCD agreed to apply on behalf of Lid I-5 and much of the letter content was used for the grant application. A $2 million grant was awarded in March 2024.

January 2023 – Washington State Legislature | Lid I-5’s legislative priorities for the year. This resulted in $200,000 in funding awarded to the City of Seattle for further lid studies.

August 11, 2023 – Seattle City Council | Comments on draft Resolution 32100, which later passed and created the City of Seattle’s full official endorsement of the Lid I-5 project.

April 21, 2023 – Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board | Lid I-5 letter urging that Freeway Park’s landmark controls permit the future expansion and evolution of the park

November 4, 2022 – U.S. Department of Transportation | CNU coalition opposition to Reconnecting Communities funds being used to expand highways

February 22, 2022 – Puget Sound Regional Council | Comments on draft 2050 Regional Transportation Plan

September 22, 2021 – U.S. Congress | CNU coalition support for Neighborhood Access and Equity Grants

August 5, 2021 – U.S. Congress | CNU coalition support for the Reconnecting Communities program
