Lidding I-5 is a hot topic around town – amid booming population growth, who doesn’t want more acres of usable public land that also reconnects our communities and addresses pollution? Our Co-Chair Scott Bonjukian recently discussed this with the podcast Talk to Seattle.

You don’t want to miss the next conversation: The general public is welcome to a panel discussion at the Downtown Seattle Association’s annual gathering on Friday, February 8, at 3:15 PM. The panel includes Lid I-5 Steering Committee member Liz Dunn and Karen Thompson, Director of Planning with the Penn’s Landing riverfront project in Philadelphia where a public park over Interstate 95 is being rebuilt and expanded.

Lid I-5 Feasibility Study Progress

Another milestone has been reached! The window for feasibility study bids closed Monday, and the Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) confirms numerous proposals were submitted by consulting firms. For a relatively modest project, the opportunity to study lidding I-5 drew a big response from the engineering and design community.

From here, OPCD and an interdepartmental team will narrow the qualified finalists and select firms to interview in mid-February. By March the study will begin in earnest and move Seattle towards a more connected future. The consultant team will investigate engineering conditions and construction options, funding models, and land use scenarios. The public will have several in-person and online opportunities to be involved throughout 2019.

As citizen advocates we will continue to represent community interests while working closely with OPCD and our elected officials during the study period. The growing Lid I-5 coalition is depending on credible and actionable results so the City can move quickly into the next steps in 2020 and beyond: A public design process, schematic engineering, and collaboration with the Washington State Department of Transportation. Lidding I-5: A Big Idea

Imagine Greater Downtown is a partnership between the City of Seattle, King County Metro, Downtown Seattle Association, and Sound Transit. They’re exploring ten big, creative concepts to develop a vision for 2035 – and the “Freeway Stitch” is one of them!

Check out the idea page here and share a few thoughts about why lidding I-5 is an important next step in Seattle’s future. We always cite our city’s growing need for parkland, the demand for affordable housing sites, and the opportunity to improve pedestrian mobility. The freeway is a 20th century traffic scar that needs to respond to 21st century needs for healthy walkability, quality of life, and equitable public investments. As seen throughout King County and the nation, lids are a viable solution. The “Freeway Stitch” will be a major step towards improving Seattle for future generations.
